Apply to be Vice-Chair

There has never been a better time to be involved with ICUsteps. Like most small charities, we began with the Board of Trustees also undertaking all the charity's work as well as guiding the organisation's direction, making strategic decisions and ensuring we fulfil our mission.

As ICUsteps enters our 20th year of operation, we're looking to appoint a Vice-Chair to the Board of Trustees.

This is an opportunity to work with Mo Peskett, Co-Founder and Trustee, who will provide support and mentorship over the next year, ensuring a smooth transition into the Chair role, and the successful continuation and growth of the charity.

Joining ICUsteps as a Vice-Chair offers a unique opportunity to actively promote our work and mission. The successful person will be given the chance to engage with individuals, meet new people and to be part of leading and developing a vibrant engaging team of trustees.

If you're passionate about creating a positive impact and improving the outcomes of those affected by critical illness, we welcome your interest in becoming ICUsteps Vice-Chair.

What's involved

The role is home based, and you would be volunteering your time which we estimate to be around 10 hours per month. Expenses can be claimed in line with our Expenses Policy.

Meetings of the Board of Trustees are quarterly and held on the first Sunday of March, June, October and December, with the AGM being held in September. Meetings are held on-line via Microsoft Teams, although from time to time are in person as and when agreed.

Vice-Chair is a Trustee role and as such, you need to be over 18, have no criminal record, be willing to undergo a DBS check, and complete our safe-guarding training.

You may be asked to guide, advise and oversee the work of volunteers on a particular topic and report back to the Board with updates, or raise any issues that arise for more urgent discussion.

You’ll have opportunities to represent us at events and committees, help expand our reach and impact within the community. Your feedback and insights gained from engagements and meetings will be invaluable in shaping our future practices.

To support this, you'll need to gain a good awareness of our history, activities, brand guidelines and ethos to be able to advocate for the charity and those we support.

Trustee skills

We’re a friendly and understanding bunch, so a sense of humour will be appreciated. If you want to help others, are willing to listen, network and build relationships and are naturally compassionate and empathetic, you’ll get on well with us.

If you have prior experience with charity governance, HR matters, diversity and disability, or managing and growing a network of volunteers, we'd be especially keen to hear from you.

Most of our work is done digitally, so you'll need to have good IT skills, internet access and your own computer. The ability to collaborate using digital tools and platforms such as Teams will be needed.

Good communication skills, the ability to organise your own time, a willingness to ask questions whenever necessary and to respond to enquiries in a timely manner are all skills that will contribute to your role.

What we'll provide

All Trustees are be provided with an ICUsteps email address and an Office 365 license. You’ll be supported as you get up to speed with the organisation, you will be mentored throughout the role to ensure a smooth transition into the Chair's role in September 2025.
